Mary Catherine Peter

Mary Catherine Peter, 95, passed away on January 14, 2025, at the Willows on Citation, where she had been living for the last several years. She was born in Louisville, Kentucky on September 11, 1929. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Gene, parents, Edwin and Catherine Schupp, and siblings William E. Schupp, John T. Schupp, Robert L. Schupp, Rita Smith. Mary is survived by her children, Mary Jean Dittert (Rainer), Brenda M. Rawlings (Tim), Gregory J. Peter (Charla); grandchildren, Brandon P. Eddins, Chelsea M. Naugle (Kyle), Michael T. Rawlings (Ellen), Kent J. Rawlings (Julia); great grandchildren, Harper and Emmalyn Naugle, and Phillip, Henry and Rhett Rawlings; and 17 nieces and nephews. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandma, and Gigi. A graduate of Mercy Academy in Louisville, she went to work for American Surety Insurance Company after graduation. Mary loved to dance and attended weekly dances at Fort Knox. While she met many servicemen at these dances, she fell for “the second handsomest” guy she had ever seen while working at American Surety. They had one date before Gene enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Germany. After Gene returned to work at American Surety, they eventually dated again. After a short courtship and engagement, Mary and Gene were married on February 7, 1959. Gene was very involved with the Jaycees (US Junior Chamber) and Mary was active in the Jaycee-etts in her younger years. They had a group of friends with whom they played bridge monthly for many years. Mary also loved to cook and was always known for the wonderful meals she prepared. Later, Mary and Gene enjoyed traveling and going to the casino. After Gene’s death in 1998, Mary continued to travel with family and, until recently, still enjoyed visits to the casino. The family would like to thank very special friends Beth and John Avent for including Mary in many of their activities, neighbors Patty and Steve Brooks and Mike Hulette for looking out for Mary as she aged at home and Joyce Garrett for always checking on Mom while she was at the Willows. Family was always very important to Mary, and nothing made her happier than visits from her adored children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Mary has been a resident of the Willows at Citation for the last several years and the family would like to express their appreciation to the staff for their care and concern. Mary was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church for 50 years. Services will be conducted by her brother-in-law, Father Martin Peter, on January 28, 2025, 11:00 a.m., at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 72 Good Shepherd Way, Frankfort, KY. Services will be followed by lunch in the Parish Life Center. A private burial was held at the Frankfort Cemetery on January 17.
