Paul Thomas Saunders

Paul Thomas Saunders, age 81, husband of Judy, passed from this earthly life on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, and into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 13, at 1:00 p.m. at LeCompte Johnson Taylor Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. until service time. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judy (Sutherland) Saunders; his daughter, Rhonda Moberly and her husband, Gene, of Paris, KY; his daughter, Donna McGlaun and her husband Greg of Springfield, OH; his sister Elizabeth Sullivan of Frankfort, KY; his grandchildren, Kaylin Flannery and her husband Wade, Cory Moberly and his wife Beth, Jordan Moberly and his wife Aly, Jonah McGlaun, Hallie Peterson and her husband Malik, Hannah McGlaun, and Emma McGlaun; his great grandchildren, Branson Flannery, Brooklynne Flannery, and Ryder Moberly. Paul was born on September 9, 1941 at home in Shelby County, KY and was saved at the age of 12 at Pigeon Fork Baptist Church. He was baptized in the creek behind the Crawford’s home. He raised his family at Pigeon Fork Baptist church where he became a deacon. Paul didn’t go to college instead he built a career by hard work. He started working for Southern Supply and helped deliver appliances. He then learned he could make more money becoming a tire changer. He learned quickly. Firestone offered him a job changing the big earthmoving tires. Due to appendicitis the doctor required him to be on light duty, so Paul was moved into a retail store to assist the service manager. Paul was a very quiet man. He decided to build his confidence by taking Dale Carnegie courses and listening to Zig Zigler. A short three months later he became the service manager. He quickly became District Retail Manager, top salesman for Firestone of the United States, held a position on the National Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association and ultimately a part owner of 5 stores located in Danville, Frankfort and Lexington. His career allowed him many business trips that offered an opportunity to see much of the world. Paul retired from Firestone in 1994 and continued dabbling in real estate. Throughout the years he helped others to achieve their business dreams as well. He was the president of the local Lion’s Club Chapter in Lexington and was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 1976. Paul moved his family to Nicholasville the summer of 1977. The family became members at Porter Memorial Baptist Church. He taught 6th grade boys, became a deacon and was the Sunday School Director for many years. If the doors were open, Paul was there. He had a heart to share the gospel. He participated in visitation at the church every week. Throughout life he would hold fast to sharing the gospel either in words or in actions. He never allowed his businesses to be open on Sundays in order for people to attend church with their families. He participated in several mission trips to Mexico and Prague. In his spare time Paul enjoyed camping, water skiing (of which he would barefoot ski and he would teach others to ski by having them stand in front of him on his skis). He loved playing golf, listening to Southern Gospel Quartet Music, riding motorcycles, beating his wife in canasta and above all time with his family. The annual tradition of his reading the Christmas story will be missed this year.
