Morris E. Burton
June 17, 1931 - October 24, 2016
Morris Emmett Burton, 85, passed away on Monday, October 24, 2016 following a brief illness. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 211 Washington St. in Frankfort with Rev. Phil Hill officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends at a Celebration of Life from 5:30-8 p.m. at The Lancaster at St. Clair, 306 Wapping St. Born June 17, 1931, he was the son of Mason Emmett and Minnie Testermon Burton. A Somerset native, he attended the University of Kentucky and graduated from UK College of Law in 1954. After graduation, he proudly served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force until 1956. He then moved to Frankfort where he practiced law for many years and served as Commonwealth Attorney from 1984 until his retirement in 2000. He was a compassionate man who served his community through his leadership in many organizations. He was an active member of the Frankfort Kiwanis Club, Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, and a member of First United Methodist Church. He previously served as chairman of the March of Dimes, was a member of the Franklin County Bar Association, Kentucky Bar Association, University of Kentucky Alumni Association, and was named the Commonwealth Attorney of the Year in 1991. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marcia McDaniel Burton, three children, Beth Sturm (Larry) of Frankfort, Sandra Burton (Rob Hoenscheid) of Lexington, and Greg Burton (Jill) of Frankfort. He is additionally survived by five grandchildren; Jamie (Caroline), Alex, and Brady Sturm, Paige and Bryce Burton. He is preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Glenda Ramsey (Lloyd) and Edna Mason Gregory (Starling). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Salvation Army of Frankfort, 517 Greenup Avenue, Frankfort, KY 40601.
