Lenwood "Len" Shirrell
July 7, 1924 - June 8, 2012
Lenwood “Len” S. Shirrell, 87, Frankfort, passed away Friday afternoon following a long illness. A native of Green County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Lysle and Pernie Shirrell. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Joyce Shirrell, and his daughter Connie McKee. He is survived by a sister, Marie Lowe; two daughters, Peggy (Rick) Miller and Judy Jordan; a son, Jack (Suzanne) Shirrell; four grandchildren, Mickey Jordan, Lindsay (Alex) Graden, John Shirrell, and Christina Miller; and one great-granddaughter, Charlie Graden. Len bravely served in the Army during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Colmar, France. He was awarded several medals including three bronze stars and two Purple Hearts with cluster. He was also made a veteran member of the American Society of the French Legion of Honor in recognition of his service in World War II. Len practiced veterinary medicine in Frankfort for over 30 years. He was a dedicated member of Rotary, including 55 years of perfect attendance and serving as District Governor. He was a faithful member of First Christian Church. He served on the City Commission for 6 years. He led the VFW Honor Guard for 10 years. He also loved photography, golf and travel. Donations may be made in his memory to the First Christian Church Building Fund, Western Kentucky University, or Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Visitation will be Sunday, 2:00 – 5:00 EST, at Lecompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday, 3:00p.m. EST, at First Christian Church. A second visitation will be held Tuesday, 10:00a.m. – 11:30a.m. CST at Cowherd & Parrott Funeral Home, Greensburg. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Greensburg, KY.
